Container fumigation

Fumigating shipping containers are usually a standard protocol for many countries to ensure pests do not enter their country, as it is feared to carry diseases. The exported goods loaded within the shipping container will be fumigated and the gas will be held for a minimum period before being ventilated. Lastly, the doors will be sealed and only then the container is allowed to be dispatched. A fumigation certificate is subsequently issued for the treated contents and the container. Depending on the destination of the cargo and whether it contains wood packaging material (WPM), relevant fumigation standards are followed by the fumigator during treatment.

Vessel fumigation

It is important to have the whole vessel clean and pest-free to ensure product that is stored on board is not infested and not at risk of contamination. Vessel fumigation involves the treatment of the holds of a ship (whether they be full of commodity or empty) or the treatment of certain areas within the superstructure of the ship itself. With exports, the holds of the ship have to be inspected for cleanliness and insect activity prior to loading. If any pest activity is found, fumigation treatment may be required. Similarly, with imports, the consignment may have been infected prior to loading offshore and it (as well as the vessel itself) must be pest and disease-free. This may require fumigation treatment.
